X Original Content Rewards Explained: Rules & Payouts 2026
X (Twitter) replaced Creator Revenue Sharing with Original Content Rewards in September 2026: the verified gates, what earns, what pays and who qualifies.
Updated 2026-10-24 · 11 min read
Original Content Rewards is X's creator payout program as of October 2026. It replaced Creator Revenue Sharing on 8 September 2026 and pays creators for qualified impressions from Premium subscribers on their own original posts. Beyond the basics (18 or over, a supported country, an account in good standing) there are three gates: an active X Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business subscription, with Premium Basic excluded; at least 500 verified followers, meaning followers who themselves hold Premium; and at least 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days, with impressions on replies excluded. You apply in Creator Studio and X reviews the application. Nobody was moved over from the old program automatically.
If you learned the rules of X monetization before September 2026, most of what you know is now wrong in specific and costly ways. X monetization requirements is the checklist version; this is the long one.
The timeline
- 7 August 2026. X announces Original Content Rewards from the @XCreators account. Creator Revenue Sharing closes to new enrolments the same day.
- 14 and 28 August 2026. The final regular Creator Revenue Sharing payout cycles.
- 7 September 2026. Creator Revenue Sharing ends. Existing members stop accruing earnings.
- 8 September 2026. Original Content Rewards opens for applications. Existing Revenue Sharing members are not migrated; everyone applies.
- Around 11 September 2026. Creators report a final Revenue Sharing payout covering the balance accrued up to 7 September.
X's stated reason, from Allegra Jacchia at X, was that Revenue Sharing "had reached a point where its incentives were misaligned" and that creators "should be focused on bringing net new content to the platform instead of maximizing payouts." Every rule below removes a way of earning from reach you did not create yourself.
The eligibility rules, one by one
As of October 2026 these are the conditions X lists in its help centre. All of them have to stay true after you are accepted.
1. You are 18 or older
Unchanged from the old program.
2. You are in a country where the program is available
X pays through Stripe, so in practice your country needs Stripe payout support, which remains the quiet blocker it was under Revenue Sharing. Payout rates by country covers which regions pay what.
3. You hold a qualifying subscription
An active X Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business subscription, or a Plus, Premium, Super or Ultra plan on The X Subscription. Premium Basic does not qualify you for the program. It does still count as a Premium account when X counts the impressions and followers you receive from other people, but it will not get you in. Is Premium worth it for creators has the break-even maths.
4. At least 500 verified followers
Under Creator Revenue Sharing you needed 500 followers of any kind. Under Original Content Rewards you need 500 verified followers, meaning followers who hold a Premium subscription themselves. Only a minority of any audience pays for Premium, so the total follower count needed to produce 500 verified ones is several times higher and depends heavily on your niche. Verified followers and X monetization covers how to read the figure, which is shown in Creator Studio rather than in your public follower count.
5. At least 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days
The headline number dropped from 5 million to 500,000, and that is where the resemblance ends. The old gate counted total organic impressions on every post you made, replies included, from every viewer. The new gate counts only impressions from verified users (viewers who hold Premium), on the Home Timeline (not profile visits, search or embeds), on posts that are not replies.
A lower number, measured on a much narrower slice of your reach. The window rolls: fall under 500,000 over the trailing 90 days and eligibility pauses. The real number lives in Creator Studio (studio.x.com), not in the impressions total X Analytics shows you.
6. You actively post original content and the account is in good standing
Original content as X defines it below, plus compliance with the Creator Monetization Standards. Accounts with active strikes, or that trip the platform manipulation and spam rules, are out.
What a qualified impression is
Eligibility gets you in. Qualified impressions are what you are then paid on, and the definition is tighter still. As of October 2026, X counts an impression as qualified when it is:
- a unique impression, so one viewer counts once per post;
- from a Premium user (Premium Basic, Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business);
- on the Home Timeline;
- with at least 50% of the post on screen;
- on one of your original posts.
Excluded: repeat views of the same post by the same account, impressions on paid or promoted posts, and anything X judges artificially generated or fraudulent.
Two things fall out of this. First, the impressions figure in X Analytics is not the figure you are paid on; it will always be larger, often many times larger, because logged-out and free-tier viewers earn nothing directly. Second, there is no engagement term any more. From October 2024 Revenue Sharing paid on Premium engagement, so replies from subscribers lifted the payout; Original Content Rewards pays on Premium impressions. Being seen by the right people, on your own posts, is the whole mechanism.
What counts as original content, and what does not
Qualifies: your own writing, reporting, analysis, commentary and threads; photos and videos you made; memes, graphics and illustrations you designed; and commentary on someone else's material that adds what X calls "meaningful original value", meaning context, expertise, analysis or creative editing.
Does not qualify: posts copied from other accounts; media downloaded and re-uploaded; reposts without meaningful transformation; adding a caption or text overlay that only describes what is already visible in someone else's video; engagement bait.
Some examples, as of October 2026:
- A clip of a press conference you downloaded and posted with the caption "Wow" earns nothing. The same clip with a 200-word thread explaining what the speaker got wrong is commentary that adds value.
- A sports highlight re-uploaded with "INSANE GOAL" burned across the top is exactly the case X describes as not qualifying.
The accounts most exposed are the aggregators: meme, highlight and news-clip accounts whose impressions are still real and no longer paid.
How payouts and the application work
Applying. You apply in Creator Studio, where the two numeric gates are also shown; how to get monetized on X walks through the steps. Creators report that reviews take about three business days, that a rejected application gets one appeal, and that a failed appeal means a 90-day wait before reapplying. X does not publish those details in its help text, so treat them as creator-reported rather than policy.
Getting paid. Payouts run every two weeks through Stripe, as before. Creators report a $30 minimum balance before a payout is released, up from the $10 threshold Revenue Sharing used in its final cycles; X does not state the threshold prominently, so that figure is also creator-reported. Balances below it roll forward, so for small accounts the first payout can arrive months after the first dollar accrues. When does X pay creators covers the cycle and the usual delays.
Staying in. Lapse your subscription, fall under either gate, or pick up a policy strike, and payouts stop until the condition is met again.
What changed versus Creator Revenue Sharing
| Creator Revenue Sharing (ended 7 Sep 2026) | Original Content Rewards (from 8 Sep 2026) | |
|---|---|---|
| Followers | 500, any kind | 500 verified (Premium-holding) |
| Impressions gate | 5M organic, all posts including replies, 90 days | 500K from verified users, Home Timeline only, replies excluded, 90 days |
| Paid on | Engagement from Premium users on any post (since October 2024) | Qualified impressions from Premium users on original posts |
| Subscription | Premium or Premium+ | Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business (Basic excluded) |
| Enrolment | Opt in from Settings once thresholds met | Application reviewed by X in Creator Studio |
| Minimum payout | $10 (recent cycles) | $30 (creator-reported) |
| Cadence | Every two weeks via Stripe | Every two weeks via Stripe |
Every row moves in the same direction: toward a narrower definition of what counts. Creator Revenue Sharing, explained covers the program this replaced.
What it means at different account sizes
Only the account owner sees the verified figures, in Creator Studio, so this site has to model them from the totals a creator can see. Our estimator converts total followers and total impressions into verified ones using a Premium share of 6% for general-interest audiences, 12% for a typical account and 20% for Premium-dense niches such as finance, crypto, AI, tech and US politics, the same densities the payout bands already assume. Everything in this section is modelled; your real numbers are in Creator Studio.
The follower gate. At a typical 12% Premium share, 500 verified followers implies roughly 4,200 total followers. For a general-interest audience at 6% it is about 8,300; for a Premium-dense niche at 20% it is about 2,500.
The impressions gate. 500,000 verified Home Timeline impressions in 90 days implies roughly 4.2 million total impressions per 90 days at 12%, or about 1.4 million a month, on original posts only. At 6% it is about 8.3 million per 90 days; at 20% about 2.5 million. Against the old 5 million total, that is lower for a Premium-dense account and higher for a general-interest one, and the reply impressions that used to carry small accounts over the line no longer count at all.
Two worked accounts. A 10,000-follower account posting twice a day at average reach models at about 6 million total impressions a month on its own posts, which clears the gate at any of the three Premium shares. A 1,000-follower account at the same cadence models at about 1.8 million total per 90 days, roughly 220,000 verified at 12%, and does not qualify; it is also well short of 500 verified followers.
The eligibility checker runs both conversions against your own follower count, impressions and niche and tells you which gate binds. Once you are in, the revenue sharing calculator and the impressions to money calculator put a modelled range on what the reach is worth, and how to increase your X impressions ranks what moves the impressions that now count.
What X has not said, and how this site handles it
X has published no rate per qualified impression and no payout formula, so any page quoting one as an X figure is quoting a number X has not given.
What we do about it: the payout basis has been Premium impressions in kind since October 2024, and Original Content Rewards narrows that rather than replacing it, so the rate bands on this site, roughly $1 to $20 per million total impressions across the main audience profiles, with US Premium-dense audiences modelling at $20 to $32, are carried forward from Revenue Sharing-era creator reports unchanged. They will be recalibrated as Original Content Rewards payouts come in. If you have received one, submit it. The methodology page documents the bands, the Premium shares and the model version, and every figure on this site, including the payout calculator, is a modelled range and never a reported income.
One caution: the bands are per million total impressions, and replies and non-original posts now earn nothing, so an account whose reach was mostly replies will model higher here than it is paid until the recalibration catches up. Impressions but no X earnings covers the usual reasons the dashboard shows less than the model.
FAQ
What is X Original Content Rewards?
The creator payout program X launched on 8 September 2026 to replace Creator Revenue Sharing. It pays for qualified impressions, meaning unique Home Timeline views from Premium users with at least half the post on screen, on the creator's own original posts. X has not published a rate.
What are the requirements for Original Content Rewards in 2026?
As of October 2026: 18 or older, a supported country, an active X Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business subscription, 500 verified followers, 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days with replies excluded, active original posting, and good standing. You apply in Creator Studio.
Do I need 500 verified followers or 500 followers?
500 verified followers, meaning followers who hold Premium themselves. Creator Revenue Sharing accepted 500 of any kind. Our model puts 500 verified followers at roughly 4,200 total for a typical account, about 8,300 for a general-interest audience and about 2,500 in a Premium-dense niche. Those are modelled conversions; Creator Studio shows your real count.
Do replies count toward the 500,000 impressions?
No. The eligibility gate counts Home Timeline impressions from verified users on posts that are not replies, and the payout counts qualified impressions on original posts only. Under Creator Revenue Sharing, reply impressions counted toward the 5 million gate and Premium replies lifted the payout. As of October 2026 neither is true.
Does Premium Basic qualify for Original Content Rewards?
No. You need X Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business, or a Plus, Premium, Super or Ultra plan on The X Subscription. Premium Basic does count as a Premium account when X counts the qualified impressions and verified followers you receive from other people, but it does not make you eligible yourself.
Was I moved over automatically from Creator Revenue Sharing?
No. Creator Revenue Sharing stopped accruing on 7 September 2026 and Original Content Rewards opened for applications on 8 September 2026. Existing members were not migrated and have to apply in Creator Studio.
Does X still pay for views in 2026?
Yes, but for a narrow kind of view. As of October 2026 X pays on qualified impressions: unique Home Timeline views from Premium users, with at least 50% of the post on screen, on your original posts. Views from free-tier users, views on replies, repeat views and views of reposted material earn nothing.
How much does Original Content Rewards pay per impression?
X has not published a rate or a formula. This site carries forward its Revenue Sharing-era bands, a modelled $1 to $20 per million total impressions depending on audience geography and Premium density, with US Premium-dense audiences at $20 to $32, and will recalibrate from submitted payouts. These are modelled ranges, not reported earnings.
What is the minimum payout under Original Content Rewards?
Creators report a $30 minimum balance before a payout is released, up from the $10 threshold used in the final Creator Revenue Sharing cycles. X does not publish the threshold prominently, so treat it as creator-reported and confirm it in Creator Studio.
